Last of my Self-Important Rants…

This morning in the paper, there was already an analysis of Oscar fashions.  I think this recap of best and worst in the Post-Gazette is a good parallel to what happens when people start saying one genre of writing is worse than the others…

This will be my last post on this, I promise.

But really, I disagree with this analysis to some degree.  I don’t love Keira Knightly’s dress.  It’s okay.  I love Vera Wang in general, but is it “splendid?”  I guess it could be.  Or Charlize Theron?  I think the dress is cool everywhere but the bow.  But clearly these two loved it.  Fine.  Whatever.

They described Reese Witherspoon’s dress as “look[ing] like the final item on the clearance rack of a post-season prom gown clearance sale.”  Really?  Maybe not fabulous, but really, all that?

Art is in the eye of the beholder.

I realize it’s the job of columnists and reviewers of books to do things like this…my point which is now so fully beat into the ground is that writers don’t need to do that to one another….Oh my God, I sound like a Kindergarten Teacher.  Apologies to all.  Will post something from Marua the trainer today!!!

  1. No apologies needed. I would be mortified if someone took pictures of me for the purpose of ripping my fashion sense apart in print (which, believe me, they would).

To quote Steel Magnolias: “I would rather step on my lips than to criticize another.”

Sometimes we all need to gossip and be catty. But do it outside the public arena. I think Truvy, Weezer and the gang would agree.

  2. Jess, I agree with you…

Jaye, who says that in the movie? The quote that makes me burst into tears is “Does this tie go alright?” or words to that effect. That’s when Spud finally shows his softer side right before the funeral…from that point on it’s waterworks…

I don’t think there’s a person in the world who doesn’t gossip. I guess it can be different degrees of hurtful…maybe we need another word for the kind that is more informational, less harmful??

  3. Kathie I think it was Clairee (Olympia Dukakis). She also said “You know what they say, if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone…come sit by me.”

    God, I love that movie.

  4. What amazes me is how one award show can have so many pre-shows and after-shows when everyone is usually bored to death of the actual show! Who actually sits there and watches the Oscars???
